Frequently asked questions.

We saved a spot for you. There are designated spots behind the building on Broadus Ave.

Walk to the front door which faces Pettigru St. We’ll buzz you in!

Check-in when you arrive with one of our welcoming staff.

Take a seat in our waiting area and your counselor will get you when it’s time.

How does the first meeting go?

When you arrive, the front office folks will greet you and check your paperwork. Your therapist will then bring you to their office. They'll ask general questions about you and your mental health to build rapport and anything that will help them create a treatment plan. Your therapist will give you an idea of how often they would like to see you in order to help you make progress on your goals. You'll set up follow-up appointments with either the therapist or the front office.

What if I can’t afford counseling?

While Canterbury Counseling is a nonprofit, church-sponsored organization, a basic fee is charged to offset our expenses and to pay our quality professional staff. If persons are unable to pay the full fee, a sliding scale fee based on income and family size is offered. You may discuss these options with the front office staff or your counselor at the initial session. Canterbury Counseling Center accepts most insurance and Employee Assistance Program benefits.

Do you take insurance?

We accept most insurances, Medicare on a case-by-case basis, but not Medicaid at this time. Clients can reach out to our office by email at officestaff@canterburycounseling.org to get a copy of our current office policies.

Is counseling confidential?

Everything you say is confidential and won't be discussed with anyone. Counselors meet with a supervisor to discuss details but not names. What you share doesn’t leave the room. Counselors do not acknowledge a client they see in public. If the client acknowledges the counselor they can respond with a basic greeting, but limit any interaction.
