My approach is to work with clients as they learn coping skills, challenge cognitive distortions, and discover that the issues they may be facing do not define them and to walk in their true identity and find safety, stabilization, restoration, and purpose in their pain.
-
I work with mostly women who have experienced the following: anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, domestic violence, grief and loss, adjustment and phase of life issues, spiritual issues, interpersonal relationship issues, stress, and women's issues.

I engage clients with curiosity and compassion, offering an approach and environment where clients can safely explore their past, present, and healing for the future. My approach is trauma-informed and eclectic, using evidence-based treatment models and incorporating concepts from applied arts and neuroscience, as appropriate to the client’s needs. I am trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

People grow up developing patterns of behavior that become automatic and therefore very difficult to see. I partner with people to identify these patterns and choose something different. They get to pick how they want to show up in all areas of their life.

Anyone who knows they want something more in their life. Especially people who want to show up as their full selves.

Most beginning psychotherapy desire change. While the nature of the change process is often mysterious and spiritual, there are conditions that better support its occurrence. With Joel Koontz, you can expect an eclectic, insight-oriented treatment approach that integrates a loving, self-acceptance with a kind, curious, and honest self-investigation. Joel often integrates Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in treatment when adverse experiences have left one feeling stuck. He pursued this treatment approach following the completion of a specialization in complex trauma from Richmont Graduate University, where he received a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He enjoy working with adults and couples. Joel currently works full-time as an LPC with a local non-profit, supporting wholistic and transformative change for those experiencing a concentration of scarcity in life.
